Baptism is similar to marriage. In fact, baptism in a sense is the wedding band of Christianity. Marriage is supposed to be the thing that closes the escape hatch and excludes all other options in a relationship. When someone gets married, they vow to their significant other that from this day forward I’m forsaking all others to be with you and only you. We devote ourselves to that individual. When we fully commit to following Jesus, we take on a symbol to demonstrate our devotion to God, much like a wedding band in a marriage.
Baptism illustrates the internal commitment we have made with God. Just as a wedding band represents wedding vows, baptism represents to others our dedication to following, serving, and obeying Christ.
